General Description The Peso replaced the austral in 1992 at a rate of 1 peso = 10,000 australes. It was also referred to as peso convertible since the international exchange rate was fixed by the Central Bank at 1 peso = 1 U.S. dollar and for every peso convertible circulating, there was a U.S. dollar in the Central Bank's foreign currency reserves. Banknotes issued at that time bore the legend “convertibles de curso legal”. However, after the financial crisis of 2001, the fixed exchange rate system was abandoned.
The paper used is 100% cotton fiber with a weight of 83 g/m2, free of fluorescence under UV light and printed in three successive stages, using offset printing systems, intaglio and letterpress.
Front Description Displays the portrait of Carlos Pellegrini, who was a lawyer, public translator and politician: Senator, Congressman, Vice President of Argentina from 1886-90 and President of Argentina from 1890-92. During his administration he cleaned up finances, created the Banco de la Nación Argentina and the prestigious high-school that carries his name: "Escuela Superior de Comercio Carlos Pellegrini" (a public school of noted academic level, depending from the Universidad de Buenos Aires).
Back Description Shows the Palacio del Congreso de la Nación Argentina, is the building where it operates the legislative branch of the government of Argentina. Designed by the Italian architect Vittorio Meano and completed by Argentine architect Julio Dormal, the building was under construction between 1898 and 1906. Inaugurated that year, its aesthetic details were not completed until 1946. Local sculptor Lola Mora graced the interior halls and exterior alike with numerous allegorical bronzes. As time went by, the building proved too small for its purpose, and in 1974 the construction of the Annex, which now holds the Deputies' offices, was started. The style of the work is Greco-Roman and is distinguished by its dome, which reaches 80 meters.
