General Description The Peso replaced the austral in 1992 at a rate of 1 peso = 10,000 australes. It was also referred to as peso convertible since the international exchange rate was fixed by the Central Bank at 1 peso = 1 U.S. dollar and for every peso convertible circulating, there was a U.S. dollar in the Central Bank's foreign currency reserves. Banknotes issued at that time bore the legend “convertibles de curso legal”. However, after the financial crisis of 2001, the fixed exchange rate system was abandoned.
