General Description | Martín Miguel de Güemes (8 February 1785 – 17 June 1821) was a military leader and popular caudillo who played a memorable role in the struggles for independence. For six years he was governor of the province of Salta and, although very poor of resources, he fought an almost constant defensive war known as Guerra Gaucha and kept the rest of the Argentine territory free from Spanish invasions. To honor his memory on the 180th anniversary of his death, the Banco Central issued a 50 Centavos coin in circulation quality with similar characteristics to those currently in circulation, and a 5 Pesos gold coin in "brilliant uncirculated" quality that is the first gold coin minted by Sociedad del Estado Casa de Moneda after 104 years. Some of the pieces coined as circulation are presented in cardboard boxes with a brief biography and characteristics of the issuance. The coins included in this type of case have reeded edge and those presented in loose have plain edge. |
