General Description | Beginning in March 2012, Canadians can expect to find some of the 12.5 million 25-cent Orca coins which will be placed in circulation from coast to coast to coast. This iconic inhabitant of Canada's Pacific waters, which also cruises our Atlantic shoreline, has great cultural significance to First Nations people of the Canadian West Coast. Also endangered, large pods of this highly social marine mammal find sanctuary near the British Columbia mainland in places such as the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve of Canada and the Gwaii Haanas National Marine Conservation Area Reserve. The Orca is again artistically interpreted in a bold engraving accompanied by a blue circle in the background design of the more than 6 million coins that will be coloured as a tribute its aquatic environment. |
