General Description | Fifty years later, the intensity and excitement of the 1972 Summit Series between Canada and the Soviet Union (U.S.S.R.) still live on in the collective memory of Canadians, along with the heart, grit and determination demonstrated by members of Team Canada. Their legacy and team spirit are proudly honoured on the 2022 commemorative $2 circulation coins. The coin features the same colour accents on the reverse: red on the Team Canada 1972 Summit Series uniform; and red on the jersey’s iconic maple leaf, which appears in the background. |
Obv. Description | The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. |
Rev. Description | The reverse design by Canadian artist Joel Kimmel features two hockey players representing Team Canada in the 1972 Canada-U.S.S.R. Summit Series. Set against the team jersey’s iconic maple leaf, which is highlighted in red on the colourized coin, the hockey players are accompanied by the words “THE SERIES LA SÉRIE” and “50 YEARS ANS”. On the outer ring, the coaches’ initials and the players’ jersey numbers surround the inner core to represent the spirit of Team Canada. |
