The modern nation of Israel was founded in 1948 after recognition of the UN vote establishing a Jewish state on British occupied Palestine. The Jewish people had a long historic association with the area, from the Biblical patriarch Abraham, through the reign of King David, and continuous presence there for 4000 years. Today, Israel is a leading nation in the modern world, with several flourishing industries, notably in the high-tech sector.
