General Description 1943 was perhaps the most serious year of WW2 for the U.S. Copper was needed in huge quantities to make bullet jackets and shell casings, so the Mint was asked to strike cents in a substitute metal in order to divert as much copper as possible to making ammunition In 1943, the Lincoln penny was made of steel (with a zinc coating)

Rev. Description Two (2) wheatheads in memorial style. Between these, in the center of the coin, are the denomination and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, while curving around the upper border is the national motto, E Pluribus Unum, Latin for From Many, One Cent
