General Description | Sacagawea dollars were given a smooth outside edge (similar to the Nickel) and distinctive gold color which made it the only gold-colored coin in the United States that was circulating at the time. The dollar is nearly identical in color, size, and thickness, but not shape, to the Canadian $1 loonie coin, first minted in 1987. |
Obv. Description | This obverse of this coin depicts the Shoshone woman Sacagawea, a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, carrying her son Jean Baptiste Charbonneau. The coin's artist, Glenna Goodacre, used a 22-year-old Shoshone woman named Randy'L He-dow Teton as the model for the young Sacagawea. The words In God We Trust are above the baby's head. The San Francisco Mint Mark is over Sacagawea's right shoulder. |
Rev. Description | The reverse side was designed by Thomas D. Rogers with his depiction of "Eagle in Flight" The words United States of America One Dollar circle the reverse of the coin with E Pluribus Unum over the eagle's head and 17 stars encircling the eagle. |
