Added by Alain Martineau
General Description : An historic Presbyterian meeting house, constructed between 1804 and 1811, the tower being added in 1818.
Front Description : Designated as a Canadian National Historic Site in 1976 and plaqued in 1984, the historic Covenanters' Church stands on a hill above the village of Grand Pré. The church was built by Loyalists and Scottish and Irish Presbyterians between 1804 and 1811 while Rev. George Gillmore ministered to the needs of the congregation. Rev. Gillmore passed away in 1811, the year in which the church was completed. It is referred to as being Covenanter because some years after the construction was completed the congregation renewed their adherence to the covenant of their ancestors. A distinctive piece of the construction is an octagonal sounding board above the high altar designed to improve the acoustics of the building!
