General Description : Policing in the North:
Canada’s north is an environment that is unlike anywhere else in the world. Upon its vast and rugged land are its people of rich Aboriginal traditions and distinctive cultures. Their stories of survival throughout the lifetimes of living through the perils of an unforgiving terrain and climate are a true testament of their resilience and spirit. From Inspector Charles Constantine’s first voyage to Canada’s North in 1894 with the North West Mounted Police, the guidance given by the Aboriginal people in the North were paramount to his policing efforts.
Since that time, Canada’s police force, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, has maintained a rich and evolving relationship over the course of protecting this land and its people. Throughout our longstanding history, our relationships continue to flourish with the Nunavut, Northwest Territories and Yukon territorial leaders, community Elders, businesses and families.
Front Description : An inuksuk, a stone landmark or cairn built by humans, used by the Inuit, Inupiat, Kalaallit, Yupik, and other peoples of the Arctic region of North America. The inuksuk may have been used for navigation, as a point of reference, a marker for travel routes, fishing places, camps, hunting grounds, places of veneration, drift fences used in hunting or to mark a food cache. Varying in shape and size, the inuksuit have longtime roots in the Inuit culture.
The word inuksuk means "something which acts for or performs the function of a person". The word comes from the morphemes inuk ("person") and -suk ("ersatz" or "substitute").
