General Description : The Iron Cross was originally instituted in 1813 by King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia as an award for gallantry during the Napoleonic Wars.

It was reinstituted in 1870 by King Wilhelm I of Prussia for the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71).

In 1914,it was reinstituted for World War I as an all-German,as opposed to a Prussian award.

This particular medal is of the Iron Cross 2nd. Class,as the Iron Cross 1st. Class was worn with a pin back mounting in the same way as the star of an order's insignia.
Front Description : Oak leaves with crowned 'F.W.' monogram above & '1813' below.
Back Description : 'W' in centre with crown above & '1914' below.
