General Description : | Gilt bronze and black Maltese cross, the arms stippled and blackened within gilt borders, with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a black circular central medallion bearing the Romanian eagle; the reverse with a black circular central medallion bearing the dates ‘1941’ and ‘1945’; some rubbing to the gilding; on original ribbon with bronze suspension. The medal was established in 1994 by the post-Communist Romanian government to honour those who fought in World War II. Romania entered the war alongside German forces in 1941, invading Soviet Russia. In 1944 her forces joined the Red Army in driving German forces out of Romania and back across Hungary, Austria and Czechoslovakia. |
