General Description : | This bank was the financial institution for Rural loan, established on 30/10/1872. This institution on to April 1, 1937 became National Agricultural credit. Since it was in October 1954 renamed Agricultural Bank. On December 1st 1968 it was renamed the Bank of Agriculture and Food Industry. After the Romanian Revolution of 1989, on December 1, 1990, under Law 15/1990 and GD 1196/1990 Agricultural Bank was established as a joint stock company. Being a state bank, political power imposed granting bad loans to various "black holes" loans that were not recovered and they were paid by taxpayers, which brought Agricultural Bank to bankrupt. Total damage was 800 million. After the bank came into difficulties, in November 2001, the Romanian government has managed to escape the Agricultural Bank, which was taken over by the consortium of Austrian Bank Raiffeisen Bank International (RZB) and the Romanian-American Investment (FRAI) privatization of Romanian state costing $ 150 million, while the bank's closure would have meant higher costs, which would have amounted to over $ 250 million. |
