General Description Leuven became in 1995 the capital of the Province of Vlaams-Brabant.

The Foch Place, named after the French Field Marshall Ferdinand Foch, a hero of the First World War, lies in front of the Collegiate Church St. Petrus. The place has been renamed to Pieter De Somer Place in 2012, in honour of the first Rector of the Flemish branch of the University of Louvain.
