General Description The Vancouver Aquarium is a non-profit society dedicated to the conservation of aquatic life.
The Vancouver Aquarium was formed as the Vancouver Public Aquarium Association in 1951 and were officially Canada's first public aquarium, opening on June 15, 1956. In 1964, the Vancouver Aquarium ordered a life-sized model of a killer whale. A harpoon was set up and after a 2 month wait, a group of orcas was spotted. The men shot a young orca and instead of killing it, it was injured. It was decided to "save" the young animal and he was towed for 16 hours to Vancouver; this was the first time an orca had been kept in captivity successfully. Vancuver Aquarium also witnessed the first orca calf to be born in a Canadian facility, and in 2000, their last remaining orca was purchased by Sea World. Since then, no orcas have resided at this facility
