Front Description | Gastown Vancouver is a national historic site of Canada and the oldest neighborhood in the city. Situated in the northeast corner of Downtown Vancouver next to the Eastside neighborhood, Gastown was the first downtown core and its development and expansion was an integral part of the overall city’s eventual growth. It was named for a man named Jack “Gassy” Deighton, the person responsible, of all things, for opening the town’s first saloon. Gastown Vancouver quickly grew from the late 1800s into the early part of the twentieth century as a center of industry. The area is now a popular attraction for both residents and tourists, as there are many exciting Gastown attractions and destinations for nightlife, entertainment, and dining. The Vancouver steam clock remains an iconic attraction in the old district, but Gastown is now much better known for its vibrant nightlife and tourist attractions. |
