General Description | As 0f May 2011 it is called Canada Aviation and Space Museum. The mission of the Museum is to create a greater appreciation for Canada’s aviation heritage, demonstrate the vital role of aviation in the lives of Canadians and illustrate the significance of aviation in the growth and prosperity of Canada. The Canada Aviation Museum in Ottawa has one of the best collections of vintage aircraft in the world. This is a family-friendly museum with something for visitors of all ages. Aircraft and exhibits are arranged in a "Walkway of Time," tracking the history of aviation in both peacetime and war, from pioneer days to the jet age. The collections show the development of Canadian aeronautical technology in a world context. The musuem has more that 130 aircraft, and countless other artifacts such as engines, propellers, instruments, uniforms, and important works of aviation art. |
Front Description | Silver Dart, the first powered, heavier-than-air machine to fly in Canada; designed and built by the Aerial Experiment Assn (Oct 1907-Mar 1909) under Alexander Graham BELL, a flight enthusiast since boyhood. After several successful flights at Hammondsport, NY, early in 1909 the Silver Dart was dismantled, crated and brought to Baddeck Bay, NS, the Bells' Canadian home. The "aerodrome" (Bell's preferred term) had a 14.9 m wingspan and an all-up weight of 390 kg, pilot included. |
