| General Description | Greater Santiago, also known as Santiago de Compostela was one of the twelve apostles of Christ. James was made holy and called James the Greater to distinguish him from other saints named James as Apostle James Minor, or even Santiago, the Fair. James and Jaime names derive indirectly from Latin Iacobus, itself a Latinization of the Hebrew name Jacob (aportuguesado for Jacob). With the passage of time, the name evolved in different directions depending on the language: Jakob remained and other Nordic German languages, in English and James Jacques in French. |
