General Description : | The Brabant Revolution took place between January 1789 and December 1790, when a popular revolt broke in the Austrian Netherlands against the unpopular reforms of the Emperor Joseph II. Starting as a popular movement of protest, the revolution developed into a movement for independence, the revolutionaries rejected the Emperor's authority over Belgium and organized a republic, the United States of Belgium. The Emperor, initially hard pressed with a war on the Balkans against the Turks, eventually suppressed the rebellion by late 1790. |
