General Description : | Mike Little (Technical content from Anatomy of the Titanic by Tom McCluskie, and Titanic: The Ship Magnificient by Bruce Beveridge. H1825 bow and H1796 propellors of The Olympic © National Museums Northern Ireland / Collection Ulster Folk & Transport Museum). Canadian Post have unveiled the images that will go on a series of stamps to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Titanic. More than 1,500 people died on April 15, 1912, when the enormous Cunard liner sank after colliding with an iceberg off Newfoundland. The event has been immortalized in story, song and film, and given the centenary, the stamps are but one example of many memorial items. With these stamps, we hope to preserve the legacy of the Canadians whose lives were deeply touched when Titanic sank off our coast. Each corner block contains 2 stamps showing RMS Titanic's bow (front) and 2 featuring the stern (rear). The detailed illustrations were based on existing photographs and are intended to be as realistic as possible. The Bow: Titanic's enormous bow and two front anchors appear in the centre of the first pair of stamps. The Stern: The second stamp pair shows the 3 propellers that were situated at the rear of the ship—2 larger outer propellers and a smaller centre propeller. |
