General Description : | Picture engraved by Silas Robert Allen Issued by the Post Office Department to mark the completion of one hundred years of responsible government in Canada. The central motif of the stamp consists of an illustration of the Centre Block of the Canadian Parliament Buildings in Ottawa. At the top left appears a profile of the young Queen Victoria, during whose reign responsible government for the colony was introduced. Since the centenary of responsible government occurred during the reign of King George VI, his portrait appears in the upper right portion of the same stamp. The Parliament Building was used on this stamp since it is the meeting place of the elected representatives of the people of Canada. |
