General Description : | Based on a painting by Henri Masson, "Les patineurs à Hull". For Christmas 1974, the Canada Post Office will issue four stamps featuring paintings by Canadian artists which evoke the spirit and feeling of the Christmas season in Canada: "Nativité" by Jean Paul Lemieux, "Skaters in Hull" by Henri Masson, "The Ice Cone, Montmorency Falls" by Robert C. Todd and "Village in the Laurentian Mountains" by Clarence A. Gagnon. Henri Masson was born in Namur, Belgium, in 1907 and emigrated to Canada with his widowed mother in 1921. After a few years of school, he was forced to enter the working world at the age of sixteen. He began working for a metal and silver engraving shop as an apprentice and eventually became a master engraver by the time he was twenty-five. Naturally enough, Masson's first artistic attempts were wood engravings, but he later turned to painting to which he has devoted himself full-time since 1934. Although he studied art for a time at the Ottawa Art Association, he is mainly self taught. Living in Ottawa, he paints genre chiefly in Hull and landscapes in the Gatineau. His painting "Skaters in Hull" is reproduced with the permission of the owner, Mr. K. C. Binks of Ottawa. |
