Motif: The portrait of the Croatian Ban Josip Jelačić, a detail from the painting by Ivan Zasche The stamps are issued in a common sheet of 15 stamps. Croatian Post and Telecommunications sells the First Day Cover FDC and the First Day Sheet. Josip Jelačić was a Croatian Ban at the time when historical events happened. He convened the Assembly and established independent Croatia within the framework of the Habsburg Empire. The Assembly abolished the feudal relations and serfdom, freed the peasants of the obligation of villeinage service, feudal indulgence and church tithe, and gave them into ownership all the land on the estates that they have cultivated up to that time, and that used to be the basis upon which their obligations rested. In the same year the Croatian flag was established, the tricoloured flag that would, together with the Croatian historical coat-of-arms, express the identity for the Croatian people and state.
