The motif is a portrait of Dr Julije Domac, pharmacist and professor, founder of the Institute of Pharmacognosy in Zagreb.
Pharmacognosy, the science dealing with the composition, production, use and history of drugs of plant and animal origin, is one of the oldest pharmaceutical sciences, since the knowledge of medicinal plants is as old as the mankind. The Institute for Pharmacognosy of Zagreb University, founded mostly by the endeavours of the Croatian pharmacist and professor Dr Julije Domac, started its work on March 24, 1896, and was the first independent institute for pharmacognosy in the world. All the other institutes followed the Zagreb institute in their organization. A part of the Institute is a rich collection of medicinal drugs and microscopic preparations which is used in scientific and educational purposes. The collection includes over 3000 samples, some of which are extremely rare. The Croatian collection is one of the four major European collections.
