DALIBOR MARTINIS Coma, 1997 - interactive video-installation The contemporary Croatian artist Dalibor Martinis, (born in Zagreb in 1947) has been a pioneer of video art on the Croatian and world artistic stage since the times of the turn of the 60s into the 70s. Using new media, mostly through video, performance, installations, ambience and interactive works, Martinis has continued to present his works at the most important world art events, bringing home awards and prizes (from the Sao Paulo Biennale, the Documenta in Kassel, the Kwangju Biennale and the Biennale in Venice). He can be identified both at home and abroad by his investigative approach, a high artistic standard and a specific world, where it becomes difficult to determine the borders between time and space, the "warm" and "cold" approach, traditional esthetics and the language of high-tech. In his video-installation "Coma", which is based on the cloudiness of the borders between the conscius and unconscious, death and dream, the spectator is being prepared to accept becoming part of the picture. His body, or to be more precise, his hand turns into a screen that gets part of the picture projected on it, at the same time turning the spectator from an observer into a participant, or even better, the executer. That is why it does not come as a surprise that the artist has literally used the metaphor of the electro-shock in the "Coma". |
