General Description : | Serie: 177, Type: R, Stamps in serie: 6 Hrvatska Kostajnica is a town sheltered by Mt Djed, in the picturesque valley of the Una, which partly separates Bosnia from Croatia. The first written record of Hrvatska Kostajnica dates from 1240. The medieval fortress above the Una was built by local nobility, and soon after it came into the hands of the Counts Zrinski and Frankopan. In the period which followed the Turkish rule from 1556 to 1589, only a part of the wall and two roofed towers were preserved. The important years in the history of Hrvatska Kostajnica were 1776 when Vienna granted it the status of a borough, and 1788 when it was given the charter of a free royal town by the Emperor Jospeph II. During the Patriotic war, Hrvatska Kostajnica shared the destiny of the regions which were temporarily occupied by the Yugoslav Army in 1991. The town which has all the features of the Croatian historic and cultural heritage was liberated by Croatian forces on August 6, 1995, in the action "Tempest". |
