General Description : | Serie: 177, Type: R, Stamps in serie: 6 Slunj is a small town, lying on four rivers: Slunjčica, Korana, Mrežnica and Glina, where the Slunjčica joins the Korana, only 33 kilometres far from the Plitvice lakes. The remains of the medieval fortress on the right bank of the Slunjčica stand as a witness to the long history of the Croatian town Slunj. The town belonged to the Counts Frankopan of Krk for a long time, and later became a royal fortress and an important stronghold against the Turks. It belonged to the Turks for a short time, only till 1584, when the Turkish army was defeated near Slunj. In the twentieth century Slunj suffered war disasters twice: in 1941 it was under a short Italian occupation, and in 1991 the Yugoslav army made its barbaric imprint on the very heart of the century-old Croatian town. The town, liberated in the action "Tempest" on 5 August 1995, is rising from the ashes of war and destruction. The beauty of the Slunj scenery is indestructible just like the town itself. The canyons, the forests and the ancient water-mills inspire a feeling of beauty, and the falls of the swift Slunjčica at Rastoke, like a miniature copy of the Plitvice lakes, are a gem in a scenery. |
