General Description : | Serie: 177, Type: R, Stamps in serie: 6 Gračac is the town situated in a Karst valley in the south of Lika, on the crossroads of Gospić-Knin and Obrovac-Donji Lapac roads which in some places climb to 700 or 800 metres. The railway line Zagreb-Split crosses the Gračac valley. Picturesque rivers, a lake and the town large Cerovačke caves in Mt Velebit, south-east of Gračac, complement the beauty of this scenery typical of Lika. The Gračac region acquired its character from the impact left by the Turks, the Napoleonic conquests, the Austrian rule, the Military Cordon and the two world wars. Besides the turbulent centuries of military and political storms, this small town in Lika saw a temporary occupation by the imperialistic Serbian aggressors in 1991. Liberated on August 5, 1995, Gračac became again a part of its original country - Croatia. |
