General Description : | Serie: 177, Type: R, Stamps in serie: 6 Obrovac is a town rising in the unique Zrmanja valley, on the crossroads between Dalmatia, Lika and the Croatian Primorje. The historical heritage of Obrovac contains numerous remains from the Ilyrian and Roman times, and there are well-preserved remains of the 13th century medieval castle built above the river Zrmanja valley by the Counts Gušić-Kurjaković of Krbava, descendants of one of our oldest tribes. The remains of a 16th century fortification witness the Turkish rule, and Venice left the trace of its dominance by destroying and burning the town in the second half of the 17th century. After the fall of Venice, Obrovac came under the Austrian rule, and, from 1813 to 1918, shared the destiny of the other regions of Dalmatia. A less attractive story started with the rise of the Serb pretensions when Obrovac was another target of the invading Yugoslav army raids. Liberated in the "Tempest" on August 6, 1995, Obrovac is again what it has always been - a Croatian town. |
