General Description : | Serie: 177, Type: R, Stamps in serie: 6 Drniš is a small town in the Dalmatian hinterland, on the west border of Petrovo polje, near the Drniš pass between the mountains of Promina and Moseć; on the crossroads to Ravni Kotari and the coastal region of Croatia and on the Zagreb-Split railway line via Knin. Drniš was first recorded in history in 1494, but archaeological remains from its environs go back to the pre-Roman times when the tribe of Dalmati lived in the area. The history of Drniš was marked by invaders who have raided this country for centuries. First it was the Turks, then Drniš was in turn taken by Venice, the Napoleonic armies and Austria. September 1991 brought war atrocities. The tragic story of the occupied town and its environs reached its climax in the barbaric acts against the Meštrović family mausoleum at nearby Otavice. The devastating power of the Yugoslav invader did not, however, succeed in annihilating the identity of the Croatian entity, and on August 5, 1995, the onslaught of the Croatian defenders during "Tempest" swept away the years of stagnation and suffering. |
