Osijek lies on the right bank of the river Drava, 25 km upstream from its confluence with the Danube. At the end of the first century BC, the Romans built the town of Mursa on the site, and the emperor Hadrian proclaimed a Roman colony in 133 AD. Mursa became an important stronghold on the Roman frontier, but was destroyed in the 6th century. The settlement of Osijek was built west of the Roman city ruins in the 10th century, and was first recorded in 1196. Between 1526 and 1687 it was under Turkish rule and looked like a real Oriental town. After the liberation from the Turkish rule, the Turkish town of Osijek was demolished, and the Austrian autorities built a new Baroque town and a military fortress, today’s Tvrđa, whish also incorporated a part of the Turkish fortress. In 1809 Osijek became a free royal town, and in the late 19th and early 20th century it was one of the biggest and most industrial towns of Croatia. |
