General Description : | Serie: 163, Type: R, Stamps in serie: 6 The town of Čakovec on the Trnava stream, is the economic and cultural centre of Međimurje, a fertile region well-known for its vineyards, agriculture and hunting grounds, between the rivers Mura and Drava. In prehistoric times this was the site of Aquama (wet town). In Roman times it was a legionary camp. In 1546 the counts Zrinski became the owners of Čakovec. In the times of the Zrinskis the castle was lavishly decorated, surrounded by a park with sculptures of famous army leaders and monarchs. The acacia trees which can still be found in the park are several hundred years old. At the end of the 18th century the owners of the town became the counts Festetić, and the town was turned into a big estate where industry, crafts and trade developed. In the military clash between the Croats and the Hungarians in 1848, the Ban Jelačić liberated Čakovec and joined it to Croatia. Today Čakovec is the seat of the Međimurje county. Although it is a modern town with a highly developed industry, its old core has been beautifully preserved and renovated. |
