General Description : Serie: 46, Type: R, Stamps in serie: 7
Motif: The Kaštel on a rugged promontory in Pazin. Pazin, the seat of Istrian "županija" (regional administrative unit in Croatia), is mentioned by Oton’s Charter (983) endowing the bishop from Parentium with Castrum Pisini. Castrum is the Kaštel of today with the adjoining houses on the steep cliff falling till the underground river (its chief tributory is the Pazinčica - Fojba). Pazin grew rapidly around the 9th century Kaštel. It still preserves some relics built in the 13th to 16th centuries: the spacious cistern court surrounded by four ample tracts. The civic Pazin extended towards the four ample tracts. Pazinčica River to the south-west, and to the Buraj neighbourhood, later toward the parish church of St. Nikola (built 1266, extended 1441, the beautiful Gothic polygonal presbytery dates from that period). A number of Croatian intellectuals frequented the Croatian Grammar School at Pazin (founded 1899). Pazin passed to Italy with the rest of Istria (1919). After the defeat of the Fascist Italian government (september, 1943) historic decisions were proclaimed at Pazin: to join Istria to the mother country Croatia. In the postwar era Pazin revived as a cultural, commercial and political centre of Central Istria. It flourished as an educational centre for all of Istria. It now has a Grammar School, Ethnographic Museum, Historic Archives of Istria, the Reuniting Hall, the People’s University, the Juraj Dobrila Istrian literature society, etc. The stamp was printed in sheets of 50 pieces each. HPT put on sale the commemorative envelope (FDC) and a commemorative sheet, too.
