General Description : | Serie: 46, Type: R, Stamps in serie: 7 Motif: Zorin-dom, 1892. In Karlovac, the city on four rivers (Kupa, Korana, Mrežnica, Dobra) the "first Croatian Choral Society" was inaugurated (1858) which quickly developed into a centre of cultural life so that by the end of the 19th century there were no less than forty cultural societies in the town. To mark the twenty-five year anniversary of the periodical Zora a temporary musical centre was started and two years later there was a general movement to "build a centre worthy as a meeting place for the citizens... and at the same time an adornment for the town". Money was collected over five years and from May to November 1892 Zorin-dom was built, still today the centre of musical, theatre and art life in the town and the central point for social events. In the war for the defence of Croatia which is still being waged a great deal of damage was inflicted on Karlovac as the town was caught up in the Greater Serbian aggression and became a Croatian defence centre. The stamp was printed in sheets of 50 pieces each. HPT put on sale First Day Cover (FDC) and Commemorative Sheet. |
