General Description : | Serie: 14, Type: R, Stamps in serie: 7 In the series of postage stamps entitled "Croatian towns" HPT-Croatian Post and Telecommunications issued a regular postage stamp - Gospić-. Motif: Dr. Ante Starčević Street in Gospić, the Annunciation Church. Gospić (pop. 9 000) has administrative, trade, and cultural services for the surrounding Lika Region. The town is situated in the western part of the plain of Ličko polje along the Novčica River on a major highway from Zagreb to Karlobag via Plitvice lakes. Settlement began in the 6th century, there are notable Older Iron Age and Bronze Age sites adjacent to the locality of Lipe. Growth of the community was given impetus in the 17th century when the Lika Hedaquarters of Vojna Krajina (Millitary Border Territories) was established there. From that period date the notable tower of Senković Agha, the barracks (1767.), the Barock-style church of St. Mary (1780.), and also a lot of the 19th-century buildings. The federal yugo-army and the cetniks levelled most of Gospić and its surroundings in the early 90s (in autumn 91 and during 1992.). The stamp was printed insheets of 50 pieces each. HPT put on sale the envelop of the first day of issue and a commemorative sheet. |
