General Description : Serie: 46, Type: R, Stamps in serie: 7
Motif: the rotunda of the Church of St. Donat (ninth century) built on the site of the Roman forum, and the bell tower of the Cathedral of St. Stošija (thirteenth century). Archaeological finds suggest that Zadar (formerly Iadera) was inhabited in the ninth century B. C. The town on the Adriatic coast grew to become a maritime stronghold of the Liburnians in the sixth century B. C. Today, Zadar is the centre of northern Dalmatia. Many buildings in Zadar still bear testimony of glorious times of Croat rulers (among them Petar Krešimir lV, Vekenega). Among the best known relics from Zadar is the collection "The Gold and Silver of Zadar", with about a hundred items made by Zadar’s goldsmiths, sculptors, painters and other craftsmen between the 7th and 18th centuries. Because of its thirty old churches, Zadar was by some called "Little Rome", and among the preserved places of worship are the Church of Saint Donat from the 9th century; the Cathedral of Saint Stošija, whose construction began in the 12th, and was completed in the 14th century; the Church of Saint Mary and the Benedictine Nunnery from the 11th century, which was partially reconstructed in the 16th century; the Church of Saint Keršovan from the 12th century in front of which there is a monument to the renaissance poet from Zadar Petar Zoranić, the author of the first Croatian (pastoral) novel "The Mountaines"; the Church and Monastery of Saint Francis from the 12th century, which was also partially reconstructed; the Church of Saint Simon with the sarcophagus of St. Simon, a masterpiece of the art of the goldsmiths of Zadar. The stamp was printed in sheets of 50 pieces each. HPT issued a first day cover (FDC) and a commemorative sheet.
