He mostly lived on his estate in Čakovec but was also successfully engaged in battles with the Turks. Summoned by the king Ferdinand III he took part in the final battles of the Thirty Years' War against the Swedes, and was given the title of "general of all Croats" for his bravery, and was appointed ban in 1647. In the following years he successfully waged war against the Turks and won European fame in 1664 when he led his troops to Osijek, where he burnt the famous Suleiman's bridge. What remained after him is not only his glory of a warrior but also some literary works, the most famous one being in Hungarian, where he described the defence of Sziget and the death of his ancestor Nikola Šubić Zrinski. |
