General Description : | ALTE OPER-Old Opera The building was opened 1880, designed by the Berlin architect Richard Lucae and financed by Frankfurt citizens. Amongst the invited guests for the inauguration was also the German Emperor Wilhelm I. The opera house was the site of numerous world premieres, such as of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana in 1937. During the World War II, the opera house was badly damaged through an air attack in the night of 23 March 1944 and should be replaced by the will of the magistrate by a modern office complex. Also thanks to the donations collected by a citizens' initiative, the House could be rebuilt, and opened again on 28 August 1981. |
