General Description : | This castle is actually a suburb defended by high walls, towers and fortified gates, and was built in the north western area of the destroyed Roman city of Urbs Salvia, whose ruins were included both in the area of the castle and within the fortress. The fortress is much later than the fortified borough, since it was built in the early sixteenth century by the city of Tolentino, occupying the site of a preexisting medieval circle possibly on the very site of the Roman Arx (fortress) of Urbisaglia. The fortress, surrounded by a ditch, enclosed also the ancient 12-th century tower, one of the many sighting towers common in the early Middle Ages. |
