General Description : | Mary Stevenson Cassatt (May 22, 1844 – June 14, 1926) was an American painter and printmaker. She lived much of her adult life in France, where she first befriended Edgar Degas and later exhibited among the Impressionists. Cassatt often created images of the social and private lives of women, with particular emphasis on the intimate bonds between mothers and children. A familiar name among art lovers, Mary Cassatt is best known for her sensitive paintings of mothers and children. After attending Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts for four years, she studied painting in France, Italy, and Spain. Encouraged by Impressionists such as Monet, Renoir, and Degas, she remained in France until her death in 1926. Cassatt is pictured on the 23¢ Great Americans stamp. |
