General Description : | Notre-Dame cathedral celebrates its 850th anniversary Notre Dame is making history for its 850th anniversary. An impressive, 13-metre high structure will stand in front of the building for a year. The history of the cathedral began in 1163, when Maurice de Sully, Bishop of Paris, began its construction under the reign of King Louis VII (the Young). In 2013, it will therefore be 850 years since the first stone of this architectural gem of Gothic art was laid. To commemorate this exceptional anniversary, Notre-Dame is undergoing several ‘rejuvenating treatments’. Major renovation work has been carried out, not only to preserve this masterpiece but also to make it even greater. |
